Drift Mining. Drift mining is a process of accessing alluvial deposits by cutting into the side of the earth, rather than tunneling directly downwards. The opening to the mine will be dug slightly lower than a rock or mineral vein whenever possible. The tunnels that are excavated are horizontal and are known as drifts.
